Open Dental is an open-source Practice Management (PM) software solution that offers many features including charting, billing, image applications, etc. The software is most suitable for small to large-sized dental practices. The prescription capabilities of the software include e-Prescribing (e-Rx) as well as printed prescriptions which can be filled in using built-in customizable templates. The prescriptions given by the physicians can be reviewed and tracked using an automatically created report.
The top PM software features a treatment plan module that collects all required treatments for an individual patient, organized in order of priority. The users can send, add and customize the treatment forms via this module and can also modify fees for separate individual procedures.
Open Dental also provides a patient portal that can be used to make payments, view appointments and treatment plans, send or receive web-mail and download summaries of treatment and care. The appointment calendar in the patient portal can be viewed in both weekly and daily modes. You can use different colors to differentiate appointments between different providers.

Pros: The online support is quick to respond and the frequent automatic updates keep the software running smooth.
Cons: You can open sections simultaneously, for example, you cannot open the patient chart and the schedule at the same time.
Verdict: The software works well with other programs and even offers a great set of features to streamline daily workflows.

Pros: It conveniently customizes all of our templates and diagrams e-Prescribing (e-Rx) as well as printed prescriptions.
Cons: We have not had any issues with Open Dental software. I am not suggesting that it is a perfect system. But I have to say we have been with them for the past 2 years.
Verdict: It is definitely worth recommending as it is a very efficient software.
