Ob-Gyn EMR Software Buyer's Guide

Obstetrics and gynecology is the only specialty where doctors have two patients, not one. Care must be taken of not only the mother’s health but also of the child. Not all pregnancies are the same, and because of the challenges each patient brings it is understandable that OB/GYN specialists require their own EMR software to better manage their practice.

Features of OB/GYN EMR Software

Everything else being the same, there are some features that are unique to EHR software targeted especially for OB/GYN specialties.

Specific Templates – Even though each case is unique, there are certain conditions and stages of the OB/GYN specialty that are very common and are repeated every day. To make these easily accessible and cut down on examination time, the OB/GYN EMR software comes with built in templates specific to OB/GYN:

  • Breast cancer
  • Urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Gynecologic oncology
  • Incontinence
  • Menopause
  • Screening for STDs
  • Postpartum depression
  • Sexual dysfunction

ICD/CPT Coding – As the CDC updates their codes for disease the electronic medical record software updates the codes for OB/GYN for the doctor’s convenience. This also helps with billing because when the code is automatically identified it makes the claim stronger.

Imaging Integration – Because OB/GYN is reliant on imaging such as ultrasound and perinatal testing, it is imperative that the EMR software is integrated with the machinery so results can be transferred immediately and stored in patient files.

Pregnancy Tracking and Fetal Monitoring – Imaging integration helps track the progress of the pregnancy. Every step can be monitored by the physician helping them ascertain the due-date, which also helps them educate the patient in the progress and what they can expect in the next stage of pregnancy.

Risk Management – The EMR software helps build a flowchart of the pregnancy which makes it easier for physicians to track any concerns they have, or any dangers that might arise and counter them before they do.

Lab Integration – Through this all lab results come directly in the patients file in the EMR software. This makes keeping track of documentation easy, and everything is in one place to go over.

How to Choose OB/GYN EMR Vendor

Now that you’ve narrowed down all the vendors that provide OB/GYN EMR software you need to narrow the selection down to those that fill your requirements as a specialty as well as a medical practice.

Size – Some vendors cater better to large practices while some are best suited to smaller ones. EMR systems are designed keeping a certain number of users, scalability and support required in mind. When selecting a vendor keep in mind the size of your practice.

System Design – The choice, essentially, is between installation of the software in your on-site computer server, or cloud-based software that is available anywhere via Internet. Which system a practice goes for depends on their personal choice and comfort level. Some doctors feel more comfortable having the system on their computer server because they feel this is more compliant with HIPAA requirements, while others need to have access to their database wherever they are. You’ll need to shortlist vendors who fulfill your needs in this department.

Certification – It makes sense to make sure the software you’re going to purchase is certified. For OB/GYN the certification you should be looking out for is by the ONC-Authorized Testing and Certification Body (“ONC-ATCB”). They are responsible for making sure your vendor meets Meaningful Use objectives and is HIPAA compliant.
