Rheumatology EMR Buyer's Guide

One of the primary needs of rheumatologists is swift prescription orders for patients, and quick diagnostic reports import to track patient progress. An Electronic Medical Record focused on rheumatology must take into account the specifications, and unique requirements of rheumatology, to be able to enhance clinical workflow, and provide productive efficiency.

Features of Rheumatology EMR

Specialty Focused Templates – Built-in templates make point-of-care patient charting accurate, yet SOAP notes choked with unnecessary templates negates that point. Rheumatology specific EMR must have templates that only relate to rheumatology,  such as:

  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Joint stiffness
  • Rashes
  • Sun sensitivity
  • Raynaud's phenomenon

Interface with Labs – A strong lab interface will allow rheumatologists to send customized order sets of tests that need to be conducted on each patient. This also allows quick import of patient results that can be stored and managed automatically on their files.

Device Integration – Similarly integration with diagnostic devices such as X-ray machines enables quick results, and effective data storage on patient files.

Imaging for Annotation – Point-of-care charting becomes even better if rheumatologists are provided with built-in image templates, such as hands, knees, feet etc., for them to mark affected areas of patients. These help rheumatologists review patient history and development quickly, saving time.

Assessment Plan & Tracking – A robust EMR aimed at Rheumatology will enable quick suggestions of assessment plans, and track patient progress through graphs. These provide a quick view for rheumatologists, who can then assess outcomes of treatment, modifying the plan accordingly.

e-Prescription – Pain management is essential in rheumatology which is why an electronic medical record designed for rheumatology should have e-Prescription. This helps track patient drug history, their allergies, send quick prescription orders, as well as set reminders for prescription refills so patients aren’t inconvenienced.

ICD/CPT Codes – Like specialty specific templates, built-in rheumatology specific ICD-10 and CPT codes enable accurate claims for a quick billing process.
