Urgent Care EMR Software Buyers Guide

Urgent care clinics are fast-paced emergency facilities with high-volume workflow that need Electronic Medical Records software that can keep up. EMR catering to emergency care centers must be able to accelerate patient check-ins, wait time, and quick charting without inaccuracy. It should also be able to streamline workflow to generate greater revenue through robust coding and billing functions.

Features of Urgent Care EMR Software

Templates – Urgent care templates need to be comprehensive and easy to chart patient complaints quickly. Though the SOAP note templates range from the basic to complex, they need to be customizable for each facility to set according to their needs. The sheer volume of urgent care documentation also requires and electronic medical record to be able to evaluate, store and manage multiple complaints. Some of the templates can include:

• Physical exams • Dermatological • Gastrointestinal • Musculoskeletal • ENT • Work accident

Medical Equipment InterfaceUrgent care EMR should be integrated with the entire set of diagnostic equipment used in emergency rooms and facilities like X-ray machines, EKGs, labs, radiology and Holter monitors. This enables all patient data to be in one place for quick viewing, thus making it easier to determine a treatment plan.

E&M Billing – An EMR designed for an urgent care clinic will have specialized codes—like emergency or after hours services and specialized procedures like fracture treatment and laceration repairs. The EMR should also support the facility in billing to a variety of different payers, including employers for services like physicals and drug screening, worker’s compensation claims, group health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid and self-pay.

e-PrescriptionUrgent care EMR should be able to send prescriptions directly to pharmacies through an electronic interface. This cuts administrative and stationary costs as well as reduces the risk of error.

Bubble Sheet Intake Forms – The entire point of urgent care is to dispense healthcare without wasting time. Bubble Sheet forms expedites patient check-ins through familiar, easy to fill forms that resemble standardized tests. An electronic image of these forms is automatically retained on EMR that has Bubble Sheet support capabilities.

Referral Tracking – Most urgent care cases are referred to specialists after initial emergency care has been given. An urgent care EMR (Electronic Medical Record) would have the capability to track referrals as well as provide secure messaging for discreet patient medical file sharing.
