Optometry EMR Buyer's Guide

Optometrists can make use of EMR software to streamline their clinical operations as well as enhance their practice. Optometry specific EMR has features that assist in earlier detection of medical conditions of the vision such as retinal detachment and uveitis. Optometrist electronic medical record should also feature a display screen that shows the changes in a patient’s intraocular pressure (IOP) values over time.

Features of Optometry EMR

Templates – SOAP note templates that are designed specifically for optometry cut down on the time practitioners spend on note-taking. Customizable, these templates encompass all relevant symptoms and diagnosis that can come up such as:

• Cataracts • Blurred vision • Glaucoma • Trichiasis • Macular degeneration • Chalazion • Conjunctivitis • Corneal abrasion • Ectropion • Graves’ disease

IOP Tracking – Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the fluid pressure inside the eye. Most Optometry emr software will have a screen display measuring the IOP over time. This helps track a patient’s eye health, as well as an early indicator for glaucoma.

Diagnostic Equipment Integration – All diagnostic equipment should be integrated with the EMR. This makes data collection efficient and available on one platform. All the test results from the autorefractor and keratometer are directly sent to patient files.

Coding and Prescription – Because all the exam devices are integrated with the electronic medical record, coding and prescription becomes easier. The integrated exam results can automate coding for billing purposes as well as help send accurate prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses to through e-prescribing.

Point-of-Sale Capabilities - One of the things that separates optometrists from many other medical specialties is the associated retail sales. Some optometry EMRs may offer point-of-sale (POS) capabilities, which can make selling and managing your inventory of glasses and contact lenses faster and easier.
