Infectious Disease EMR Buyer's Guide

The field of Infectious Diseases (ID) is evolving and requires an electronic medical record software that can keep up. ID specialists need a fully integrated EMR that makes import and export of patient data secure and discrete. They also need a robust interface with labs, pharmacies and diagnostic equipment to device treatment plans.

Features of Infectious Disease EMR

Customizable Templates – Patients are referred to ID specialists because their symptoms can’t be diagnosed by their primary physician, or because they don’t fall under a specific diagnosis. Yet there are certain fields that ID specialists must always cover when examining a patient. electronic medical record software designed for ID should have these templates encoded in the electronic medical record to make charting quicker, saving time, and have customizing options to suit personal needs. Some of the common templates are:

  • Community acquired pneumonia for infants and children
  • Headaches
  • Meningitis
  • High grade fever
  • Septicemia
  • Infectious diarrhea
  • Sexually transmitted disease

Secure Messaging – Software designed for ID specialists must be able to import patient data from their primary physician. These can include patient medical history, current lab reports as well as results of diagnostic tests conducted. ID specialists require these to pin point the nature of the infectious disease, as well as formulate a care plan.

Care Plan – EMR that suggests a care plan for diagnosed infectious diseases saves precious time. ID specialists might not always rely on suggested care plans, or follow them through in their entirety, but to have an outline that can be modified saves time, and enhances patient care.

Immunotherapy Management – Once a care plan has been decided the Electronic Health Record should have automated alerts to track antibiotic dosing, drug history, vaccination history, pending vaccinations, red flag warnings in case of allergies, as well as patient recall. These help streamline patient care, as well as enhance clinical efficiency.

Integrated Systems – For updated patient charts, Infectious Diseases specialty EMR should support an interface with labs, pharmacies, and diagnostic equipment for quick and efficient data storage and management.

Progression Charting – The EMR should support charting of all data for a quick glance review of all information, as well as progress charts to track patient progress.

ICD/CPT Codes – Built-in ICD-10 and CPT codes for infectious diseases enables a faster claims and billing process, with less error and ineligibility.
