Radiology EMR Buyer's Guide

Radiology practices require an electronic medical record that can run through a wide range of diseases and diagnostic imaging. It needs to have a strong integration with devices, a robust interface with other practices, and a secure messaging portal for referrals.

Features of Radiology EMR

Templates – Specific, customizable templates help declutter electronic medical record SOAP notes, making patient charting quick, efficient and error free. Some of the basic templates a Radiology practice would need are:

  • Nuclear radiology
  • Interventional radiology
  • Cardiovascular radiology
  • Radiation oncology
  • Chest radiology
  • Breast imaging
  • Gastrointestinal radiology

Device Integration – Radiology relies heavily on diagnostic devices and equipment. A Radiology electronic medical record must have enhanced integration with X-ray machines, CT scan, MRI, and other imaging equipment to be able to diagnose a wide range of diseases.

Care Plan for Cancer – As one of the treatments for cancer, Radiology Electronic medical record should have a care plan for cancer treatment that charts out patient appointments, their previous doses, and track progress. This treatment plan should also have alerts, and reminders for next appointments.

Volumetric Image Visualization – Radiologists are required to render a lot of 2D imaging results into 3D for a comprehensive view. Radiology Electronic Medical Record must be compatible to enhance this task, as well as provide greater interface with imaging technologies.

PACS Compatibility – Since Radiology practices have to navigate through a large number of imaging test and reports the EMR should have a strong picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).

Referral Tracking – Through a strong interface with other practices, Radiology practices can share imaging and diagnostic reports, and track patient referrals through secure messaging.

ICD/CPT Codes – Built-in Radiology specific ICD-10 and CPT codes ensures accurate claims for a faster billing process.
